Cruise ship trends 2020: more passengers and additional routes

by Royal Holiday January 19, 2020
written by Royal Holiday
tendencias_cruceros_2020

Cruise ships trends for 2020 are focused on having more passengers living the fascinating experience of this way of traveling.

According to the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), which brings together the most important shipping companies in the world, 32 million people will take a cruise next year.

Almost half of them will come from North America (14.24 million), followed by travelers from Western Europe (6.73 million); Asia (4.24 million); and Australia-Pacific region (1.46 million).

For that reason, shipping companies are proposing diverse and fascinating routes to provide tourists with a greater variety of options.

There is already an option called “micro-cruising”, which are trips of three to five days whose target audience is tourists who have little time available, but are willing to embark on this adventure.

The Association foresees that in 2020, the interest of travelers will grow in respecting local culture and diversifying excursions, so routes with longer stopovers are already being considered to visit the destinations extensively.

An increase in the number of single travelers is also forecasted, so some companies have already removed the surcharges for traveling without unaccompanied in a double occupancy cabin, as well as the inclusion of studio-type cabins, and other amenities for this type of tourist.

Cruise Ships Trends 2020: Greener Ships

If you are a traveler who is also concerned about the environment, CLIA points out that the sector will invest over USD$20 billion to promote clean technologies and reduce emissions by 40%.

They plan to accomplish that by using more environmentally friendly fuels such as natural gas, and with hybrid exhaust gas cleaning technology, which reduce polluting particles by half.

As a Royal Holiday member, you can enjoy the benefits of “Royal at Sea”, where you can book using your vacation points, cabins on fabulous cruise ships routes.

10 Silly Mistakes People Make On Their First Cruise

by Royal Holiday November 12, 2016
written by Royal Holiday

Going on your first cruise can be an overwhelming experience. There is so much to plan, so many things to do before you can consider yourself ready and so many ways you feel things may go wrong. Here at Royal Holiday Cruises, we try to get you prepared for your first cruising experience, so you can make the most of it and enjoy it to the fullest. However, it happens more often than not, that people do not prepare accordingly and make mistakes that while may seem funny when you look back; they sure felt terrible at the time. Here we have some of the most common rookie blunders cruisers make on their first trip, but quickly learn to never repeat again.

Don’t pack accordingly

Packing is a mix between art and science. We have talked about it before here on our blog and you can also find many guides of how to do it perfectly according to self-proclaimed experts. The biggest mistakes people make, usually have to do with packing things they think are ok, and later realizing the were not allowed on board. The secret is to do your research and find out exactly what the restrictions before hand. Oh yeah and remember to bring extra hangers! Trust us on that one.

Forget to bring a carry-on

Bringing a carry-on is one of the smartest things you can do when coming in a cruise. But the real secret is knowing what to pack in it. The trick is to have all the things you will need within the first 6 hours of the trip, because sometimes it takes that long for you to have access to the rest of your luggage. The process is long and slow, because there are a lot of passengers waiting for their things, so while they are stuck in line, you can be enjoying the pool and having fun with your loved ones.

Overdo it with the buffet

Just because is all you can eat, it doesn’t mean you have to eat all you can. Remember you are on a moving fortress that swings back and forth with the movement of the sea. Overeating can lead to seasickness, and that can make your experience a miserable one. Do stuff yourself with the food and just eat enough to feel sated and remember there are many other things to do on board. Pace yourself.

Spend too much on souvenirs

It make look like a great idea at the time, but buying a lot of clothing from the Caribbean may leave you with a bag full of flower-patterned shirts you may never ever wear again. Make sure you aren’t overpaying either, remember you are a tourist and that means they see you as an easy target. Be careful with your spending so your cruise experience doesn’t become a financial nightmare when you get back home.

Buy more things that they can bring back

Part of packing accordingly includes leaving enough space for souvenirs. It would be terrible if you can’t bring with you everything you took there. Some people fight this by bringing stuff that they are purposefully going to leave behind like almost empty shampoo bottles or sandals that are almost to the end of their life cycle. Make room for gifts from the moment you pack.

Forget about sunscreen

Just because the wind is chilly, it doesn’t mean the sun is not burning your skin. This is one of the biggest mistakes people make, especially those with fair skin that are not used to the sun at sea. Even if you aren’t feeling the heat on your skin, the sun is burning you, so make sure you wear sunblock because when it comes to sunburns, by the time you detect it, it is already too late.

Don’t socialize

You have a lot in common with the people cruising with you, you are all literally on the same boat, so take the opportunity to make some friends and meet some people. Some folks forget about this aspect and pass on one of the coolest experiences from traveling aboard a cruise line. Make some friends.

Forget to book excursions in advance

Sometimes people think that going out on their own and making their own excursion arrangements can save them money. The truth is, it actually can be more expensive in most cases, and you also have to worry about being out there without any guarantee you will make the port call. Cruise lines work with local guides to give their guests the bests prices on excursions by booking them themselves and also are mindful of making it back on time you are going to be positive to not miss your boat.

Book your cruise in the wrong season

Weekend cruises are not for resting and neither are those during school break. Make sure you are ready for that the season offers and that includes many children, party people or strange weather.

Forget about visa or passport requirements.

Find out before departing which requirements do you need for the different ports you will be visiting. That way you won’t miss out on the fun by having to stay on the boat while others enjoy the local fun.

The Galapagos Is One Of The World’s Most Amazing Destinations

by Royal Holiday November 7, 2016
written by Royal Holiday

The Galapagos are a group of islands located about 500 miles away from Ecuador in the Pacific Ocean. The archipelago is very popular for being a place where Charles Darwin concentrated much of its scientific research due to their large number of endemic species and their great biodiversity. The Galapagos Islands have been ranked in the top spots of places to visit in Central and South America as well as the best islands in the world, the best national parks, the best family summer vacation and also some of the most affordable vacation spots in South America. No other place in Earth offers such close encounters with nature and such an amazing opportunity to experience one of the most pristine and untouched ecosystems of the planet; sadly we do not know at this rate, for how long they will retain their magic and conserve all of their ecological value at the rate we are destroying the planet.

You can see The Galapagos during the whole year if you chose to do so. June through August are the busiest months to visit as well as the priciest time to go to the island, from December through May the weather is hotter and the rains are more constant but the ocean is calmer. If you are into SCUBA diving, experts recommend to go from September to November when the water is a lot colder and you can see more marine species out and about.

Without a doubt, the wildlife is the main reason why people chose The Galapagos as their holiday destination and they do it rightly so. As we mentioned before, the diversity and amount of species that you can’t find anywhere else in the world, are very abundant here.

The Galapagos are one of the few places left in the planet where human touch is practically non-existent. The islands do not have an indigenous population and they were actually the first place to be named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Most access to the islands in restricted and requires licensed guides to take you there in order to further protect the place from our destructive influence.

The educational value of visiting the Galapagos is unmatched. Here you can witness first-hand the marvels of evolution unfolding before your eyes and understand why this place presented such a strong evidence to support Charles Darwin’s theories and his work in natural selection. Giant tortoises, sea lions, and birds like finches and boobies are all over the place and their lack of fear for humans can give you the chance of experiencing some of the closest encounters you will ever live with this amazing creatures.

If you love the water, this place is as diverse beyond its coasts as it is inland. More than 400 hundred different species of fish have been documented in this area and more than 10% of them are endemic to the region. The place is perfect for snorkeling as well with the whole family with the guidance of the experts in the subject. Finding penguins, sea lions, and even sharks is not uncommon when you venture to discover underwater life at The Galapagos.

The opportunity to take amazing photographs is another great reason why people love to come here. It feels like you are cheating when you gaze upon the vistas and landscapes the Galapagos have to offer. Even the newest amateurs can be sure that they will capture some of the greatest shots they will ever be able to take in any vacation.

The beaches here are absolutely stunning. You can find some of the bluest waters and the whitest sands you have ever seen, as long as you don’t mind sharing the space with sea lions and birds instead of umbrellas, food stands, and noisy vendors. Each island is like a different world unto itself. You can find all kinds of topography, landscapes, vegetation and animal life that has existed for thousands of years untouched.

Visiting The Galapagos is both beautiful and sad at the same time, because at this rate, this amazing archipelago composed of more than 60 different islands will eventually disappear. Tourism is something that greatly contributes economically to the conservation, protection and preservation of these ecosystems, but at the same time, collective consciousness about the issues that leave the future of this beautiful in such a degree of uncertainty must be raised. Those who visit the Galapagos must leave the islands as heralds and ambassadors of the beauty they have experienced and understand their role in making sure that many more generations can enjoy that same privilege.

The Best Tips For Saving Big Bucks On Your Next Cruise

by Royal Holiday October 26, 2016
written by Royal Holiday

Royal Holiday Cruises stands behind the type of entertainment we offer with the utmost certainty that this will be an experience you will never forget. Cruising provides passengers with one of the coolest and most amazing traveling options to be had.

However, for the budget conscious traveler, it is always important to find ways to save some money and perhaps find a way to make these type of vacations something periodic ever year or so. Here we have some small ideas, tips, and tricks that can help you little by little save a bit in the way you cruise and at the same time, get the most out of your hard-earned money when you book with us.

The time when you book matters. People always think that booking early means getting the best deals, but there is such thing as booking too early. If you book too early you may not allow for prices to go down a bit before they come back up. Anything earlier than 6 months is way too early and may bar you for getting you the best deal on your package. In some cases, waiting for the last minute can pay off as well, as some lines greatly reduce prices if they feel they may not book enough passengers, but doing this is a bit risky because you could miss out and not find tickets all together. For great deals, take a look at our offers at Royal Holiday.

Cruise excursions may be the way to go. Cruise lines usually offer excursions when in port that can take you to see nice places around the area, eat at good restaurants and do a bit of shopping. While some people believe that you are better on your own finding a local guide and just exploring, the truth is that in some cases it is better to stay with the line. One of the advantages is that obviously you will not miss the call to embark once again, but also you have to consider that in some cases the cruise lines have deals with local businesses and have already negotiated for the best prices. Keep this information in mind before you decide how to proceed.

Traveling during the off-peak seasons is also a smart move if you want to significantly save on fare, but make sure you check weather patterns and read the fine print on your deals, you do not want to lose you money because you weren’t covered and you missed your flight due to bad weather.

Another good choice to consider is to make a bid online for your cruise vacation. There are websites that even let you name your own prices and in some occasions, these are the best ways to get a really low fare.

Not all on board restaurants are included. In some cases, you can simply save money by dining in the restaurants already included in your package, but if you want to take advantage of all the options available on board, you may want to look into getting a restaurant package that covers some of the extra options beforehand. You will save a lot if you do it this way instead of deciding once you are already on board.

Another nice little trick is to try to go to the restaurants on the first night as they normally have special deals or check them out during lunch when prices are lower.

Take a break and disconnect. We know sometimes is very difficult to try to stay away from the world you left behind and you may want to check your email constantly and stay informed of all Facebook updates, however, paying for internet access on the ship is expensive and it can rack up quite a tab. If you absolutely need to be connected, then try to get your package on day 1 when they are usually cheaper.

The best way to save if you like to drink alcohol and sodas while you are on board is by getting a package deal as well that includes all of your drinks. Remember that most beverages are not allowed on board; so plan ahead if you want to save by buying a pass beforehand.

Compare when you are shopping. We offer different cruise lines on our websites and the prices of packages vary constantly, make sure you do your homework or even go as far as hiring an agent because they have the knowledge to help you find the best deals possible and assure a future customer.

Signing up for the “frequent cruiser” program has its advantages, you can rack up miles as well as getting small little perks just by signing up, so don’t miss it.

If you book for your next vacation while still on board, you can get really good discounts and in some cases, you don’t even have to pay penalties if you later choose to cancel your trip.

The Best 10 Packing Tips For Your Next Cruise

by Royal Holiday October 15, 2016
written by Royal Holiday

Are you one of those people who starts packing weeks in advance, weigh your luggage at every step of the way and choose carefully what to bring and what to leave behind? Or are you one of those who thinks they idea of making a list and worrying about packing earlier than the night before is just ridiculous? Whether you are an early packer or a last minute loader, we at Royal Holiday Cruises always bring you the best tips and tricks to make the most out of your next adventure.

Packing can make the difference between a great trip or a disaster if you aren’t careful and this is especially true when we talk about cruises, since the space is more limited, things that are forgotten can’t always be easily replaced and there are some restrictions and considerations that must be observed when planning your trip. So here you have it, some of our best advice on how to pack for your next adventure traveling the seas.

Your carry-on is the key

Your carry on contains all of those things that stay by your side during the trip from your home until you finally arrive to your cabin. This is important because in case the rest of your luggage gets misplaced, at least you have some things with you, but that is not all. You will not have access to your luggage for a few hours after you come aboard even if everything goes according to plan. Your carry on is the perfect place to store a change of clothes and perhaps your swimsuit so you can start enjoying the cruise as the rest of the passengers wait for their bags to arrive.

Pack a bit in each other’s bags

If you travel with a significant other, then pack at least one outfit in each other’s bag. In the event of a bag going missing or being delayed, at least you have something you can wear packed in the other person’s bag and vice versa. Pack together and make sure you aren’t occupying space by doubling down on items that can be shared.

Remember you can do laundry on board

While it can be a bit expensive, remember you can save space in your bag by having clothes you can have cleaned while on the cruise and then you can wear them again. Small sachets of laundry detergent can help you wash some essentials in your bathroom and just hang them up to dry if necessary.

If you are picky bring your own toiletries

Most of these things are already provided, but perhaps not the brands you use or like. You can bring your own in this case and save space by using travel size containers or even the big bottles if you have some at home that are almost empty; just use what’s left and discard the bottle while on the trip.

Pack according to your destination and the dress code

Your destination should dictate the clothes you bring on your cruise. Shorts are not recommended if you are traveling to Alaska and you wouldn’t forgive yourself for missing a formal evening because you simply don’t have the appropriate attire.

Don’t pack to full capacity

Remember to leave room in your bags for possible souvenirs and purchases you make while on the trip. All destinations are great places to buy things you may not be able to find anywhere else in the world, so make sure you have that in mind and that way you won’t have to worry about picking between your new ware and something that you may have to leave behind due to poor planning.

Bring a beltpack, you will use it

Yes, they may look goofy but they are great for carrying your important documents, handheld devices or just some money as you walk around the ship. They are more versatile than your wallet and you don’t need pockets, so give them a chance.

Pack by outfits

If you pack by complete set of outfits, including accessories and underwear, you will be less likely to over pack and thus save a lot of space. You can think about when you may change and consider special occasion and things like date nights on the cruise and then have it all ready. Bonus points if you separate each outfit in a different ziplock bag.

Tag your bags

Save yourself a headache by having your own personal tags on your bags in additions to the ones you get from the airline. Those pieces of paper with a flimsy elastic band will fall off easily and your bags will be unmarked.

Photograph your luggage and copy your IDs

This will make your life a lot easier if you lose any of your items. The picture can help others help you find your bag easily and the copies of your IDs will prove very useful if you misplace any of that important documentation.

Exploring 3 Of The Most Amazing Arctic Islands In The World

by Royal Holiday October 11, 2016
written by Royal Holiday

Arctic Islands

When we talk about islands it is inevitable to imagine beaches, white sands, blue waters and beautiful landscapes that urge you to go on holiday and soak in the sun; but when we mention arctic islands we are not referring to those tropical paradises, but instead to places with white and cold landscapes, ideal for skiing and observing the wide variety of animals that are not common to other ecosystems due to their specific adaptation to cold weather.

On this specific article, here at Royal Holiday Cruises, we want to talk about some islands that most people are completely unaware of their existence due to their faraway location, however these places are beautiful and wonderful to rest and get away, where you will find very few inhabitants that ensure the safety and wellbeing of the area.

Ellesmere

Ellesmere is considered one of the coldest and largest islands in Canada and the whole world. It belongs to the group of Queen Elizabeth Islands in the Arctic Ocean and is divided by the Arctic mountain range, which makes it the most mountainous island out of the whole group. The wildlife in this place is very rare to find elsewhere, such as the arctic wolf, the muskox, caribou and polar bears. Ellesmere spans for 196,235 Km² and has a population of around 168 inhabitants mostly living in Grise Fiord, the capital.

The waters surrounding Ellesmere remain frozen for most of the year, but during the summer, the river thaws and most of the waters because negotiable on a ship. Paleo-eskimos were the first inhabitants of this wild land; they were highly skilled hunters that lived of walruses. Later the Vikings came followed by the first Europeans in the year 1616 represented by William Baffin. The island was subject to many discoveries and investigation by scientists that found here many species of animals that were considered unusual at the time, like a large camel long extinct as well as many species of plants and vegetables like the Mammoth Tree. In 2004, a fish names Tiktaalik was discovered. This specimen had gills and scales but it also showed extremities that seemed to have been functional like elbows and wrists. Near Ellesmere, you can find a remote place were the most northern people in the world live. The place is called Alert and it’s just a few hours away from the North Pole, only five people live here and they are in charge of running this meteorological and scientific station. Nearby you can also find the Quttinirpaaq National Park and the Ellesmere Island National Park.

Wrangel Island

Located in Russia and considered a natural sanctuary protected by the federal government and the Russian ministry of natural resources. The island sits between the Chukchi Sea and the East Siberian Sea. The tallest point on the island is Sovétskaya Mountain topping at 1093 meters. Many valleys, lakes, rivers and ravines accompany the mountains in this island. Wrangel island is very famous for being the last place in earth mammoths lived. Today you may find the lairs of many polar bears, arctic foxes and muskox as well as walruses and arctic owls.

Bear Island

The island is located in the western part of the Barents Sea, it was discovered the 10th of June of 1596 by Willem Barentsz and Jacob Van Heemskerk, a couple of Dutch traders that were traveling to China. The island is named Bear Island due to the large amount of polar bears living there. The island is also full of seagulls that use it to lay their eggs and nest their young. The island is very remotely located and only nine people live there, they are all workers of the Herwig Hamna meteorological weather station. This is a land that is completely cold and lonely but it’s also home to someone of the most beautiful landscapes and unmatched vistas in the world, filled with pines and all kinds of trees as far as the eye can see. There are also rivers, creeks and frozen waterfalls that find their way to the foot of the mountains and reflect moss covered rocks on their crystal clear waters. Fishing is the main occupation for those who live around the island and there is plenty of fish to go around. Just 175 km from Bear Island, you can find the Bear Island Natural Reserve, here you can find the tallest peak of the island with a height of 536 m.

These islands are beautiful in their own way, and discovering them is a way to look upon a different type of landscape most people aren’t used to. The amazing magic of the arctic is something that you will never forget if you are ever so lucky and adventurous as to find yourself traveling near these breathtaking places.

The Perfect Beautiful Destination For Relaxation And Fun

by Royal Holiday October 2, 2016
written by Royal Holiday

Boracay is world famous for being the beach capital of the Philippines. This tiny island was voted the best on the planet back in 2012 and today it continues to be on every single list of the tops island destinations for travelers every year. Boracay is located about 200 miles south of Manila and a mile off the northwest tip of Panay Island in Western Visayas region of the Philippines. Even though the place is small, Boracay has become very popular amongst those looking for a place away from civilization where they can relax, enjoy the peace and quiet that its white sandy beaches offer, and partake in the many celebrations held by its vibrant nightlife.

The origin of the name Boracay is not completely clear. Some say it comes form the word “Borac” which means white cotton in allusion to its white sandy beaches while others say the name is a combination of the words “Bora” and “Bocay” which mean bubbles and white respectively. The island is about 3 miles long, shaped like a bone and with the narrowest spot being less than one mile wide, and has a total land area of 4.5 square miles. There are many ways to get to Boracay like airplane connections to nearby locations and ferry rides or boats to the island, as it doesn’t have its own airport. From Malay you can take a small boat that will drop you off in Boracay after a short ride.

Ariel’s Point

This is a great day-trip destination in Boracay. Ariel’s Point is about 30 minutes away from Boracay on a boat ride and is the perfect destination for adventure seekers and nature lovers alike. One of the main things that make this destination so popular is the practice of cliff diving. People from all over the world travel here every year to experience the adrenaline of jumping of a high cliff into the ocean. Anyone can practice this great sport since they have shorter platforms for those who want to give it a go but not go all the way. In Boracay, you may find tickets for a day trip to Ariel’s Point that include transportation, food, snacks, tour guide and even in some cases unlimited beverages.

The Perfect Beautiful Destination For Relaxation And Fun

White Beach

White Beach is probably the main reason why people visit Boracay. This perfect stretch of white sand with some of the most amazing blue water you will ever see, this is also the commercial center of the island. White beach is divided into 3 main sections where you can find some of the most expensive and upscale resorts on the island, an area where most commerce takes place with shops, restaurants, stores and all kinds of businesses and also a smaller quieter area that has not yet been quite developed where people go looking for a place to relax. As busy as the beach is, people truly take care of it, so you will always find it pristine and clean. Parasailing is a very common activity here, the sights while you are up in the air are amazing and unlike anything you’ll ever experience.

Yapak Beach

Yapak Beach is the perfect example of what a paradisiac beach should look like. The place seems taken out of a postcard because it is simply breathtaking. The locals gather here to collect puka shells to make traditional jewelry and sell to the tourist; hence the place is also known as Puka Beach. The waters here are a little bit rougher than in other areas of Boracay, so this particular beach usually has fewer people visiting. This makes it the perfect destination for those looking to get away from the crowns, however, that also means that there are fewer services for tourists in the side of the island. There are only a few restaurants here but it doesn’t mean you won’t be able to find the basic necessities as well as some cold drinks and even purchase wares from the local vendors that walk up and down the beach.

Snorkeling and SCUBA

There are dozens of establishments all over the island for divers who want to experience the waters around Boracay. If you are a beginner or have never tried diving before, this is a great place to get started and give it a try, since the clear waters and the abundant sea life make it perfect to fall in love with this beautiful sport. You can rent equipment in many places around White Beach and get a guide or an instructor if you need once.

Nightlife

Boracay’s nightlife is a non-stop event every day of the week. Here you can find it all, from the most extravagant and flashy affairs of partying and loud music, to relaxing lounges, cafes and smaller venues with live local artists. Bars and clubs are everywhere to be found, and simply walking around is probably the best way to find something that suits your taste in music and atmosphere.

12 Awesome Cruising Hacks You Absolutely Must Know

by Royal Holiday September 13, 2016
written by Royal Holiday

Going on a cruise is a great experience, something unlike anything else you can do during your holidays. That being said, here at Royal Holiday Cruises, we love giving you the best tips and hacks so you can enjoy this experience to the fullest. This list is by no means comprehensive, but in order to help you make the best out of your next cruise, we have chosen some of the most useful bits of wisdom to help you prepare before you leave and enjoy while you are there.

Do your homework before booking

Remember is not only about the cruise, you also have to think about plane tickets to get you to the place where the cruise is departing from. Experts say that you should book early, but also not too early since prices are higher if you try to book anything more than two months in advance. Talking to an agent that is an expert in cruises can be of great help if this is your first time going on one. Preparing in advance can save you a lot of money and headaches.

Choose your cabin according to your needs

Balcony cabins are great because of the view, the sunshine and the tiny private “outdoor” space, but they are also in high demand so that’s why it’s so important to book early. When you are choosing your cabin, make sure you do it thinking about your proximity to areas of interest. Think about access to the pool, dining rooms and look for a location that is central to everything that interests you.

Clear your cookies and use a PC if you can

Some travel websites raise prices checking your history and seeing that you have made those searches before. Make sure you clear your cookies before quoting prices and try to do it from your phone of a PC since Mac users are usually shown pricier options of accommodations.

Get travel insurance

Check first if your credit card company offers you deals on travel insurance. Most people don’t pay attention to this type of things, but it is worth it to pay a little now and not have to worry about your luggage going missing or any type of unplanned event.

Pack outfits one by one

This is a great way to avoid over packing and to make sure you have something to wear for every day or every occasion. Packing each outfit in an individual Ziplock bag can also help you save room inside your luggage. Sometimes you will use your suitcase as a drawer while you are there, so this type of organization helps you locate your clothing quickly as it is already together.

Reduce your wallet size

Take only what you need and no more. Loyalty cards and forgotten receipts take up a lot of your wallet space and make it bulky, something that will discourage you to carry it around during the cruise. The only thing you will need is going to be your keycard and that can be carried in a thin wallet or a small cardholder.

Roll when packing

Rolling your clothes occupies a lot less space than folding them neatly. On top of that, this will keep your clothes mostly wrinkle-free and you won’t have to worry about ironing them. Make sure that you use up all the small crevices and spaces inside your shoes and between your clothes to pack up small accessories and things like socks and underwear.

Keep your electronics plugged

Cabins have a limited amount of electric sockets, so a power strip is a great thing to bring on your trip so you can charge your camera gear, cellphone, and other electronics at the same time.

Disconnect

Cruises are a great excuse to truly disconnect. Wi-Fi is available in case you need it, but this is a great opportunity to truly take a timeout from your everyday life and enjoy the company of your loved ones. The will thank you for it and you will feel refreshed after a couple of days of not worrying about your email.

Tour with the cruise line

Going on land excursions is one of the coolest things you get to do when you are at port. Make sure you first check what the cruise line has to offer, as they have already negotiated locally to get you the best deals and you can be sure that you will not miss your departure.

Make a plan for your destinations when going on excursions

Plan according to the plan and always keeping in mind the schedule. Go first to the farthest locations on your list and then you can start making your way back towards the boat as you visit other locations.

Stay healthy

Make sure you bring along any medicine you may need for the time you are there. Be moderate with alcohol especially if you get seasick. There is nothing worst than missing out on all the fun just because you are hungover. Always notify the staff if you are sick or have a medical condition worth nothing. Is for your safety and that of your fellow passengers.

Bora Bora

Bora Bora is a small island located on the western side of the Society Islands in French Polynesia. A beautiful lagoon and a breath-taking coral reef surround the picturesque island, giving that turquoise colored water that makes Bora Bora so famous. In the middle of the island, there is an extinct volcano with two massive peaks that reach up more than 2,000 feet; they are Mount Pahia and Mount Otemanu.

Bora Bora’s population is numbered fewer than 10,000 inhabitants, more than half of the living in Vaitape, the largest settlement of the territory. The island’s economy is mainly based on tourism and most products come from fishing the sea. English is widely spoken around the island with the main language being French and Tahitian.

The original name of the island was “Pora pora mai te pora” which means, “created by the gods” in the Tahitian dialect. The name used to be abbreviated to “Pora Pora” which in itself meant, “first born”, but the pronunciation of Bora Bora is also accepted and has been used since the first European explorers landed on the island back in 1722.

Bungalows on stilts are everywhere to be seen in Bora Bora, and it has become somewhat representative of the island to see these beautiful constructions sticking out of the clear blue waters. These types of buildings accentuate the beauty of the beaches and the relationship between man and nature that co-exists here in such harmonious balance.

There is no public transportation on the island. To travel around you can rent a car, or better yet, rent some bicycles and start pedaling. One of the best things about Bora Bora is that no matter if you are coming here with friends, on your honeymoon or visiting with your entire family, there are activities for everyone to enjoy according to their interests.

What to do in Bora Bora

Most things to do on the island are outdoor activities, so you may want to bring a book to keep yourself entertained in the off chance that it rains too much.

Bora Bora is world famous for its pristine beaches, turquoise waters and amazing dives. Scuba diving and snorkeling are something you have to do while you are here or you’ll be missing out on some of the most amazing underwater views in the whole world.

Matira Beach is Bora Bora’s favorite public beach and with good reason. This mile-long stretch of white sand is a great spot to enjoy the waters of this tropical paradise. Matira Beach looks like something taken out of a postcard, the contrast of colors in magical and the views are to die for. You can walk along the strip and find many cafes and restaurants where you grab a bite and enjoy the views if you are not in a mood to get in the water, but for those who want to swim, they are in for a treat. Matira Beach offers great access for scuba diving or snorkeling right off the beach, you do not need a boat nor to venture far out to see some of the most beautiful coral and fish species you can imagine; no wonder people call this beach the aquarium. There are venues on the island that rent equipment for snorkeling or scuba diving, but we recommend bringing your own mask and snorkel, as you will not regret investing in a good quality pair.

Matira Beach has been voted as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world and they are not exaggerating. The west side of the beach is a great spot to watch the sunset, there are few things more romantic in this world than a Bora Bora sunset and this spot is perfect to witness this marvelous sight.

Land tours are also quite popular in Bora Bora and many companies offer to take you around the island and show you the sights. Bora Bora was used as a strategic base for the allied forces during World War II, so many remnants of the occupation still remain today and can be visited by tourists. There are also many places that were once ancient villages of the local population. Ceremonial sites and sacred locations are excellent places to visit and just a few hours away walking. The Sacred Cave of Anau and the Valley of the Kings are some of the most culturally rich and beautiful locations to visit inland. Many services offer guides to lead you there and talk to you about the rich history of the island.

Mount Pahia and Mount Otemanu are both popular destinations for those who like trekking and even climbing. The view from above is wonderful and well worth the walk.

Family Cruises are some of the most popular style of vacations out there. Children love variety and knowing that the next great adventure is right around the corner. Carnival Cruises offer an excellent choice for entertainment and their Seuss at Sea program may be just what you are looking for to give your kids an experience they will never forget. Remember that only because this is a family cruise it doesn’t mean only the children get to play. There are daycare services for the very little ones in case you want to spend some alone time with your significant other, as well as many casual options for dining, activities for adults and larger cabins so you and your family can be as comfortable as possible.

River Cruises

River cruises are becoming more and more popular lately and they are a fun choice worth looking into if you want to try something different. A continent like Europe provides a great perspective of many interesting cities when you explore them in a river cruise; this is mostly due to the fact that many classic cities were actually born of their proximity to its rivers that were used as trading routes back then. River cruises are smaller and smaller and provide you with a more personal and intimate relationship to your fellow travelers, something that could be great if you are traveling alone or with a group of singles. Even though Europe does have a lot more choices when it comes to river cruises, the United States and China also have some interesting options for those interested in this type of adventure.

Expeditions cruises are about getting out there and experiencing nature and being part of activities that involve nature and the outdoors. This type of cruise is clearly not for everyone, so if you want to embark in a truly unforgettable experience, come ready to ride kayaks, Zodiac rafts and to learn about science and many aspects of the natural world. It is not uncommon in this type of cruises to have lecturers and to see presentations about topics of interests in the fields of culture, history, geology, geography, biology, ecology or anthropology of ship’s destinations.
