The first number, 3, refers to the limit on container size: liquid containers can’t exceed 100 milliliters (3.4 ounces). The second number, 1, indicates that all those containers should be stored in an airtight, see-through bag, like a Ziploc bag. And the third number, also 1, explains that passengers can only take one of these bags in their carry-on. The combination of the three requisites gives this rule its name.

 

WHAT LIQUIDS CAN YOU TAKE IN YOUR CARRY-ON

Under the 3:1:1 rule, you can take practically any liquids in your transparent bag, as long as the containers don’t exceed 100 ml.
