Bora Bora

Bora Bora is a small island located on the western side of the Society Islands in French Polynesia. A beautiful lagoon and a breath-taking coral reef surround the picturesque island, giving that turquoise colored water that makes Bora Bora so famous. In the middle of the island, there is an extinct volcano with two massive peaks that reach up more than 2,000 feet; they are Mount Pahia and Mount Otemanu.

Bora Bora’s population is numbered fewer than 10,000 inhabitants, more than half of the living in Vaitape, the largest settlement of the territory. The island’s economy is mainly based on tourism and most products come from fishing the sea. English is widely spoken around the island with the main language being French and Tahitian.

The original name of the island was “Pora pora mai te pora” which means, “created by the gods” in the Tahitian dialect. The name used to be abbreviated to “Pora Pora” which in itself meant, “first born”, but the pronunciation of Bora Bora is also accepted and has been used since the first European explorers landed on the island back in 1722.

Bungalows on stilts are everywhere to be seen in Bora Bora, and it has become somewhat representative of the island to see these beautiful constructions sticking out of the clear blue waters. These types of buildings accentuate the beauty of the beaches and the relationship between man and nature that co-exists here in such harmonious balance.

There is no public transportation on the island. To travel around you can rent a car, or better yet, rent some bicycles and start pedaling. One of the best things about Bora Bora is that no matter if you are coming here with friends, on your honeymoon or visiting with your entire family, there are activities for everyone to enjoy according to their interests.

What to do in Bora Bora

Most things to do on the island are outdoor activities, so you may want to bring a book to keep yourself entertained in the off chance that it rains too much.

Bora Bora is world famous for its pristine beaches, turquoise waters and amazing dives. Scuba diving and snorkeling are something you have to do while you are here or you’ll be missing out on some of the most amazing underwater views in the whole world.

Matira Beach is Bora Bora’s favorite public beach and with good reason. This mile-long stretch of white sand is a great spot to enjoy the waters of this tropical paradise. Matira Beach looks like something taken out of a postcard, the contrast of colors in magical and the views are to die for. You can walk along the strip and find many cafes and restaurants where you grab a bite and enjoy the views if you are not in a mood to get in the water, but for those who want to swim, they are in for a treat. Matira Beach offers great access for scuba diving or snorkeling right off the beach, you do not need a boat nor to venture far out to see some of the most beautiful coral and fish species you can imagine; no wonder people call this beach the aquarium. There are venues on the island that rent equipment for snorkeling or scuba diving, but we recommend bringing your own mask and snorkel, as you will not regret investing in a good quality pair.

Matira Beach has been voted as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world and they are not exaggerating. The west side of the beach is a great spot to watch the sunset, there are few things more romantic in this world than a Bora Bora sunset and this spot is perfect to witness this marvelous sight.

Land tours are also quite popular in Bora Bora and many companies offer to take you around the island and show you the sights. Bora Bora was used as a strategic base for the allied forces during World War II, so many remnants of the occupation still remain today and can be visited by tourists. There are also many places that were once ancient villages of the local population. Ceremonial sites and sacred locations are excellent places to visit and just a few hours away walking. The Sacred Cave of Anau and the Valley of the Kings are some of the most culturally rich and beautiful locations to visit inland. Many services offer guides to lead you there and talk to you about the rich history of the island.

Mount Pahia and Mount Otemanu are both popular destinations for those who like trekking and even climbing. The view from above is wonderful and well worth the walk.

Puerto Rico The Best Of The Caribbean Right At Your Doorstep

by Royal Holiday July 31, 2016
written by Royal Holiday

Here at Royal Holiday Cruises, we love giving you the best information about how amazing your next vacation with us could be. There are many remarkable islands all over the world that we know for sure, would make the perfect location for your next holiday. However, what if we told you one of the most beautiful islands in the Caribbean and perhaps the whole world, sits right at our doorstep. Get ready to be amazed and discover Puerto Rico.

Puerto Rico is officially known as the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico (Estado Libre Asociado de Puerto Rico), and is an unincorporated territory of the United States, located in the northeastern Caribbean, east of the Dominican Republic and west of both the U.S. Virgin Islands and the British Virgin Islands.

Puerto Rico is the smallest island of the Greater Antilles, with a territory of approximately 100 miles long by 35 miles wide on the main island and there are also a number of smaller islands such as Mona, Culebra, and Vieques. The island’s population is approximately 3.5 million and its capital is San Juan.

Puerto Rico’s rich history, tropical weather, diverse animal and plant species, celebrated traditional food, and warm people make it a popular destination for travelers from all over the world.

Beaches

Puerto Rico may be a small territory, but it does have more than 270 miles of beautiful coastline. Quantity stops being impressive once you experience the quality of the beaches you can find here and the endless amount of activities for the entire family to enjoy.

Caja de Muertos (Coffin Island): This uninhabited island off the southern coast of Puerto Rico is a protected natural reserve due to the amount of turtles that frequent its beaches. The island has four beaches: Pelicano, Playa Larga, Carrucho, and Coast Guard. Some of the animal and plant species found here, cannot be seen anywhere else in the world.

Flamenco Beach: Located on the island of Culebra, Flamenco beach has been rated as one of the top ten best beaches in the world. The beach extends for a mile around a sheltered, horseshoe-shaped bay and is frequented by those who want to swim, fish and dive in the most perfect turquoise waters and soak up the sun in the beautiful white sand. There are two ways to get to Culebra Island: by airplane or by ferry. Airplanes depart from Luis Muñoz Marin International Airport and arrive at Culebra airport and the ferry can be taken from Fajardo (a small city in the east of the island) and it takes around 50 minutes to arrive to Culebra.

Culture and Food

The culture of Puerto Rico is the result of a number of international and indigenous influences, both past and present that include the Taíno, European, African, American, Latin/Caribbean, Asian, Hawaiian, and more. Local architecture demonstrates a wide array of traditions and styles present over centuries of Spanish rule. Spanish colonial architecture, Ibero-Islamic, art deco, post-modern, and many other architectural forms are visible throughout the island, especially in the city of San Juan.

Puerto Rico’s amazing food, has transcended geographical boundaries and can be found in several countries outside the archipelago. If you’re one of those who believe that a culture is best understood through its food, you’re in for the trip of a lifetime. One of the main ingredients used for many traditional preparations are plantains as they can be found everyone in the island. One of the most popular dishes of Puerto Rican cuisine is the Mofongo. A mound of mashed fried green plantains; the mofongo is often stuffed with seafood, pork, or vegetables.  Another popular dish is Lechon, where an entire pig is put through a spit, and roasted over charcoal. This type of preparation is very traditional and usually done to celebrate an occasion with many people attending the feast.

Puerto Rico’s largest annual food festival has rapidly grown to one of the most important gatherings for food fanatics and chefs in the Caribbean. This weekend-long celebration of Puerto Rican cuisine offers food pavilions and great celebrity chef competitions.

Nightlife

Puerto Rico truly comes alive once the sun comes down. Salsa is the music of Puerto Rico and you can hear it everywhere as you walk the streets and meet the friendly locals who won’t be shy to teach you a few moves. Did you know that 70% of the rum consumed around the world comes from Puerto Rico? But don’t worry, not all of the rum leaves the island so while you visit, you can find some of the most exquisite blends of rum in the entire world. Puerto Rico has four distilleries and a strictly preserved tradition that dates back to the 1600s; they have perfected the craft of making their favorite drink over the centuries.

Awesome activities in the island of Minorca

by Royal Holiday February 20, 2016
written by Royal Holiday

Want to have fun on a beautiful island? Well here’s an idea! Why not consider a trip to the island of Minorca in Spain? It is part of the Balearic islands and its name comes from Roman times. It was named this way simply because its area is smaller than that of Majorca (“minor” and “major”… get it?)

Its weather is Mediterranean, you can enjoy watersports there and it is known by its richness in biological and geological terms. It has two official languages, Castilian (or Spanish) and Catalan. It is also known by the beauty of its beaches and coves.

For people who love ancient times or megalithic monuments, coves and caves, this will be the perfect destination. You will see navetas, taulas, necropoles and talaiots among the many mystical monuments of the island. Traces of prehistoric and Roman times are vividly present here. The history of art can be experienced on virtually every corner of the island. Its capital, largest settlement and administrative center is Mahon. Its municipalities are Ciutadella de Menorca, Alaior, Es Castell, Es Mercadal, Es Migjorn Gran, Ferreries and Sant Lluís.

Ciutadella is the former capital of the island. In Ferreries one of the main economical activities is shoemaking, a booming industry in Minorca, alongside tourism. There are so many sights and so many interesting zones that it’d be impossible to talk about all of them. The good news is that, being a small island, in just a few days you can get to know at least the essential places and learn to appreciate the beauty within the island. For this adventure we recommend to rent a car in order to easily travel from north to south. One side is only about 27 miles away from the other, so you could traverse the entire island in about one hour. If you’re traveling with someone else or several others, the prices for a car rental are very competitive and you all will definitely get a chance to see everything there is to see.

We can start by Mahon, the capital, which is a beautiful port city. We also recommend to stop by the Ciutadella de Menorca, a particularly beautiful city, especially if you like to take late night strolls.

You could visit one of the many fishing locations and look at the local fishermen of the area. Some of the city’s narrow streets and little white houses may remind you of Mykonos, the Greek island.

In the village of Fornells, another important fishing site, you’ll find tons of sights, especially the beaches and virgin coves, where you can rest, relax, dive or even kayaking.

There are many options that you can find on its beaches and coves. Of course some are more affected by tourism, but several others can be enjoyed in loneliness. We recommend Cavalleria, a virgin beach which is very accessible and easy to get to. The Escorxada cove is another wonderful place, though it requires that you walk a little bit more, it is not such an accessible place. Cala Turqueta and Cala in Brut’s high cliffs will prove to be beautiful landscapes and hours of fun.

A must-see site to satisfy your kayaking needs is cove Cabra Salada. Cala Pregonda, located north of the island, and Cala Macarelleta are among the best options to visit. Or, if you prefer, a water taxi will allow you to see the most wonderful spots in the south coast. There you’ll see virgin beaches, golden sand and immensely blue waters.

Minorca may seem like a very small place, but it is full of interesting places to do activities of all sorts, or just relax quietly and enjoy cultural and historical activities.

If you’re looking for peace and quiet, maybe get away from the crowds, you should add Cala Pilar to your list of spots to visit. You can only get there by foot, and even though getting there is a bit more difficult, you’ll find that the walk will be worth it.

The island is perfect for surfing, diving, canoeing, kayaking waterboarding or even paragliding. There are activities suited for families, couples or groups of friends; and you will surely find something according to how adventurous you are.

Another recommended activity for romantic people is to go horseback riding at sunset, or travel through one of the bike routes available. You can also follow gastronomical routes and enjoy the sight of a sunset from high up in the island’s hills.

There’s more to Minorca than beaches and sand. Culture is a big part of the experience. You can’t miss the monuments of the Ciutadella, Europe’s oldest building, or the Naveta of Es Tudons, perhaps the most visited monument in the island.

At the Cova d’en Xoroi you can find a bar inside the walls of a cave, from which you’ll enjoy the sight of the magnificent sea from up high. It is perfect for a drink or two after visiting the beach and before going out for a party at night.

You’ll find music and cocktails everywhere. One of the island’s most traditional celebrations is Sant Joan, which is also the first day of summer. We also recommend visiting mount Toro, from which you’ll admire the entire contour of the island.

You can find reminders of the military age of Minorca in places such as the Fortaleza de la Mola, the tower of Fornells or Fort Marlborough, which is a reflection of the struggles between Spain, Great Britain and France to take possession of the island (spoiler alert: Spain kept it!)

If you enjoy natural parks, you’ll love the S’Albufera des Grau. There you’ll feel more connected to nature than anywhere else and you will get a chance to appreciate the particular flora and fauna of the island.  Another curious and traditional option is to see the nightfall from one of the lighthouses.

Minorca is a small island, which is an advantage when it comes to traveling. Bike rides are a great option to see the beautiful, unique landmarks. There is something for everybody. Whether you get there by ship or by plane, you will find all sorts of offers.

Its gastronomy is quite special because it is built from the contributions of all the cultures that have lived there over the centuries. Cheeses, pasta, sweets… you name it!

Our conclusion: Minorca is small, beautiful and fun. So stop waiting and start packing!
