Cruise Industry Unites in Typhoon Haiyan Relief Efforts

by Royal Holiday November 20, 2013
written by Royal Holiday

In early November, Typhoon Haiyan lashed Southeast Asia with some of the strongest winds and rains on record. One of countries hardest hit by the super-storm was the Philippines, a nation made up of several thousand islands particularly vulnerable to these types of weather events. Today, the country is still reeling from nearly 4,000 deaths, tens of thousands of missing or displaced persons, and an estimated $14 billion in economic damages.

The Philippines is home to a great number of employees in the cruise industry, so most cruise companies around the world can count many staff and crew who have been personally affected by Typhoon Haiyan. For this reason, the industry has shown an especially generous outpouring of support and monetary aid in response to the natural disaster.

According to the leading cruise resource website, Cruise Critic, a number of cruise lines have announced initiatives to help their Filipino employees, as well as provide significant donations to aid efforts. Royal Holiday affiliates Carnival and Norwegian, for example, have taken extra measures to help staff and crew members connect with family in the Philippines. In addition, Carnival has partnered with the Miami Heat basketball team to pledge $1 million to relief efforts in the region. Princess Cruises has donated $110,000 to various medical organizations operating in the region. Several other lines have also contributed financial or logistical support, and rallied their passengers to give to the cause, as well.

Overall, individual cruise lines have given in excess of $2.2 million for Typhoon Haiyan recovery, according to the Cruise Industry Charitable Foundation (CICF). At the same time, the CICF itself has given an additional $100,000 to the American Red Cross for storm relief work in the Philippines.

Typhoon Haiyan has left a great deal of destruction behind it, especially in the Philippines. To aid in the region’s recovery, however, the entire cruise community—including companies, crew, and passengers—has risen to the challenge of helping those most affected by this disaster.

Celebrate the Holidays with a Cruise

by Royal Holiday November 17, 2013
written by Royal Holiday

While everyone else is frantically cooking and cleaning for the holidays, savvy vacationers are packing their bags and looking forward to a relaxing holiday cruise.

Holiday cruises are an increasingly popular way to spend the winter season. They are a favorite of many travelers who want to celebrate the classic winter holidays—Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas, or New Year—without all the worry that ordinarily comes with long car trips, hosting family, or entertaining guests. Spending a holiday on a cruise gives vacationers a chance to focus on being with their loved ones and observing the holiday in a relaxed, exotic locale with beautiful weather. At the same time, holiday cruise passengers are sure to come away with countless memories that will last a lifetime.

Some novice cruisers may worry that taking a holiday cruise will somehow detract from their celebration. After all, how “Christmasy” can Christmas be on a warm, sunny beach surrounded by azure Caribbean waters? The reality is quite the opposite. In fact, cruise lines that set sail during the holidays go above and beyond to help passengers celebrate the season. Every line offers elaborate dinner plans for the holidays, as well as an array of activities and parties to keep passengers happy during this special time of year. Of course, fellow cruisers, too, often deck the halls with their own wreaths, menorahs, and other festive decor. All this means that a cruise ship is full of holiday spirit from stem to stern.

Before heading off to reserve a last-minute holiday cruise, there are a few things to keep in mind. Holiday cruises are quite popular with families. Passengers bringing kids will likely prefer larger ships, which tend to attract lots of other families with children. These bigger ships also typically offer many programs and facilities especially for those younger travelers. For these reasons, big ship holiday cruises have plenty of activities for adults and youngsters alike, and are a good choice for families.

For those seeking a quieter holiday vacation, smaller ships generally provide a more intimate setting with fewer children on board. These smaller vessels sometimes also have the advantage of stopping in ports that larger ships can’t visit. Another alternative for a more laid-back trip is to take a longer one: cruises of a week or less are more popular with families, while longer cruises are favored by a more mature crowd.

No matter the reason for taking a holiday cruise, there are several options available. The experts at any major cruise line or travel agency are always happy to help you arrange the perfect vacation at sea.

Port Canaveral to Begin Expansion

by Royal Holiday November 15, 2013
written by Royal Holiday

Cruising from the Atlantic seaboard will soon be even easier. On November 6, 2013, port commissioners unanimously approved $80 million for the expansion of Port Canaveral in Florida. Slated to be completed in November of next year, the project will include a 185,000 square-foot cruise terminal able to handle the largest ships being designed and built today, some of which carry more than 6,000 passengers.

Port Canaveral is already a busy port of embarkation and port of call for a number of cruise lines affiliated with Royal Holiday, including Norwegian and Carnival. The coming expansion will kick off a decade-long growth plan that will dramatically extend the services offered at Port Canaveral. Cruise Terminal 1, to be completed in a year, will provide ample parking facilities for those departing from Port Canaveral, as well as many dining and shopping opportunities for visiting cruisers on a port of call. Additionally, Port Canaveral’s innovative Exploration Tower, which opened earlier this year, will be just a short walk away. Exploration Tower, along with popular regional attractions such as Kennedy Space Center and Cocoa Beach, promise to keep Port Canaveral a prime cruise destination for the foreseeable future.

In addition to providing parking, sightseeing, and retail facilities for cruisers, the project will also enable Port Canaveral to serve as the home port for at least two additional cruise ships in the near term, and more expected in coming years. This is a positive development for the region, as each additional large ship based in the area represents a boost of around $250 million to the local economy.

Port Canaveral is just one of several tourist and industrial ports receiving funds for expansion. Ports in Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and Jacksonville are deepening harbors and inlets for the super-sized “Panamax” cargo vessels that will begin arriving in 2015, when the Panama Canal widening project is complete. Like Port Canaveral, the port of Palm Beach will be expanding its services for cruisers. Overall, Florida is generously spending to ensure the continued growth of its shipping industry as well as the high quality amenities and services it offers to cruise passengers.

The Love Boat: Once Again in America’s Eye

by Royal Holiday November 11, 2013
written by Royal Holiday

Almost everybody—whether a cruiser or not—instantly recognizes the theme to The Love Boat, one of the most popular romantic sitcoms of all time. On November 5th, the cast of the famous television show reunited for a highly anticipated one-hour appearance on CBS’s daytime talk show, The Talk.

Hosts chatted with six of the regulars from the iconic sitcom: Gavin MacLeod (Captain Stubing), Jill Whelan (Vicki Stubing), Bernie Kopell (Doc Bricker), Lauren Tewes (Julie McCoy), Ted Lange (Isaac Washington), and Fred Grandy (Gopher Smith). Frequent guest star Charo also made a surprise appearance. The actors reminisced about the many interpersonal relations and conflicts behind the scenes, as well as their excitement at the unexpected success of the beloved sitcom.

The Love Boat debuted in 1977. Despite being panned by critics, the show proved incredibly popular and ran for 10 years. The show had a unique format that interwove several story lines during a single one-hour episode, and was known for attracting guest appearances from top actors of the day, including Florence Henderson and Janet Jackson. The Love Boat spun off several made-for-TV movies during its run, as well as a second series in the late 1990s.

Interestingly, while The Love Boat was mainly filmed on a Hollywood set, the story took place on the real cruise ship featured in the opening credits: the Pacific Princess. Owned and operated by a Royal Holiday cruise line affiliate, Princess Cruises, the Pacific Princess became one of the most widely recognized ships in the world. As The Love Boat, she has likely introduced millions of people to the concept of cruise vacationing.

The original Pacific Princess—now 43 years old—had a capacity of 640 passengers and 350 crew. She left Princess Cruises in 2002, was operated by a few other companies, and now rests in Turkey awaiting breaking. Fortunately, with the purchase of a newer ship in 2003, Princess Cruises kept the tradition alive by rechristening the new 680-passenger ship with the same name, so that cruisers today can still sail aboard the Pacific Princess, daughter of The Love Boat.

Six Things to Think About Before Your Cruise

by Royal Holiday November 8, 2013
written by Royal Holiday

While different people enjoy cruises for different reasons, every traveler looks forward to a restful ocean voyage, full of fun and free of worries. To be assured of a good trip, every experienced traveler knows to plan ahead—and cruises are no exception. A little preparation goes a long way toward avoiding stress that might ruin a perfect vacation, so here are a few things to consider well before arriving at the dock.

Verify Travel Documents

It’s not fun, but the most important part of a cruise is the paperwork. Passengers should verify that the info on their boarding pass is correct as soon as they receive it. They are also responsible for having the right passport and necessary visas for their destinations. Fortunately, cruise companies and travel agencies have experts who can help with these details.

Plan Activities

Because cruise ship activities, restaurants, and venues can get booked up, it is a good idea to look over the ship’s schedule and make reservations for any appealing activities. Most ships are pretty forgiving about changing these kinds of plans, so there is generally little to lose by booking a spectacular show, elegant meal, or once-in-a-lifetime shore excursion in advance.

Pack the Right Clothes

Of course, every traveler needs leisure wear—swim suits, sandals, sun hats, shorts, and so on—to enjoy all the outdoor activities aboard the ship and at ports of call. Many ships, however, also have dress codes at certain times or in certain eating or entertainment venues. Packing a couple “smart casual” outfits and a formal ensemble is usually a good idea. Of course, passengers should also pack for the destination: a Caribbean beach requires very different clothes than a tour of Alaskan glaciers.

Pack Toiletries and Health Items

Items like a favorite shampoo, specific perfumes, over-the-counter medications, feminine hygiene products, and the like can be difficult to acquire on a cruise, so passengers should pack what they need. Likewise, running out of a prescription can quickly turn a good vacation bad.

Budget for Extra Expenses

While a cruise is one of the most affordable types of vacation around, there are additional expenses beyond the cost of the ticket. These include tips for cabin stewards and waiters, and cover charges for certain clubs, restaurants, and venues. Alcohol usually is charged separately, as are organized shore excursions and incidentals bought in shops on board or in port.

Save Space for Souvenirs

Of course, the best way to spend a little extra cash is to buy souvenirs and gifts. Savvy cruise ship passengers know to pack a duffle or foldable bag in their luggage, so they have plenty of extra space to take all their vacation memorabilia back home.
