Cruising with Dr. Seuss

by Royal Holiday January 20, 2014
written by Royal Holiday

Beginning in 2014, family cruisers will have the opportunity to sail with the Cat-in-the-Hat, the Lorax, and other kids’ favorites in a brand-new “Seuss at Sea” program. Announced in early December 2013, this initiative brings together two brands known far and wide for their playful fun: Dr. Seuss Enterprises and Carnival Cruise Lines.

“Seuss at Sea” will eventually roll out to all of Carnival’s 24 ships over 18 months, starting with the Carnival Splendor in February 2014. The program includes a range of fun activities aimed at entertaining the entire family. The first sea day of every cruise will offer a “Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast” menu with items like crazy-colored pancakes, “moose juice,” and, of course, green eggs. A zany “Seuss-a-palooza Parade” featuring favorite Dr. Seuss characters will sweep up kids and parents in a conga line of dancing and singing. On select evenings, the crew will show animated movies like “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” on the lido deck.

When it is refurbished later in 2014, the Carnival Freedom will boast a dedicated play area, where kids can read books, play games, and enjoy colorful decor in the whimsical style of Dr. Seuss’ beloved stories. The Carnival Vista will offer a similar playscape when it launches in 2016.

Dr. Seuss is a natural match for Carnival, the line that popularized the “Fun Ship Freddy” mascot. Every year, the cruise line carries over 700,000 children to destinations all over the world. Incorporating a Dr. Seuss theme is just one more way Carnival strives to make its ocean vacations memorable for its family cruise passengers.

In announcing “Seuss at Sea,” Carnival continues a trend among cruise lines partnering with family-friendly cartoon brands. Disney Cruise Line has featured their classic characters since entering the cruise business in 1998. Norwegian Cruise Line teamed up with Nickelodeon in 2010 to offer entertainment featuring characters like SpongeBob SquarePants. That same year, Royal Caribbean also added DreamWorks characters, such as Shrek, to its lineup of activities.

Shipboard Spas – Ultimate Relaxation on the High Seas

by Royal Holiday January 13, 2014
written by Royal Holiday

Cruise ship spas have come a long way over the years. The earliest spas on most ships were little more than cramped rooms with barely enough room for a massage table and masseuse. Today, shipboard spas have grown into truly luxurious spaces where patrons can receive a full range of services to promote relaxation and well-being. In fact, these amenities are so popular that many cruise lines today offer special packages and stateroom accommodations for vacationers seeking a complete ocean spa experience.

Like the spas themselves, cruise ships have significantly expanded their services over the years is response to the needs and desires of their clientele. Visitors to these facilities can generally choose from a wide variety of options, ranging from ancient to high-tech, and Western to Eastern. Following are a few of the selections offered by many cruise lines.

Salon Services

Virtually all cruise ships have an array of beauty options available using top products and the latest techniques. For elegant cruise evenings, the salons provide professional hairstyling, manicures, and other standard services. Of course, shipboard salons are pleased to offer services for both men and women.

Traditional Spa Treatments

Beyond the usual salon styling services, cruise ships possess serene spaces where passengers can completely unwind while enjoying a broad range of relaxing therapies. Beauty treatments like facials, detoxifying wraps, and exfoliating scrubs are available on practically every modern cruise ship. For relaxation, every spa provides massages – usually several different kinds. Whether it is a Swedish, hot-stone, or deep-tissue massage, the spa services are generally among the most sought-after amenities on any cruise ship.

Eastern Spa Treatments

As Americans have learned more about Eastern medicine over the last few decades, the treatments have become available on cruise ships. Many ships offer acupuncture and acupressure (or reflexology) services to help patrons with their aches and pains, as well as to simply maintain their bodily energies. Also popular is Reiki, a technique in which a therapist places his or her palms on the patron’s body to redirect its energies and promote relaxation.

Medi-spa Treatments

Most shipboard spas offer a wide selection of high-tech cosmetic services, many of which are provided by licensed medical professionals. Tooth-whitening is a popular service for those who want to show off a flashy smile. Botox and dermal filler injections are also available to those seeking to smooth out their wrinkles in a quick and minimally invasive way. Many spas can also provide a regimen of ionothermie in which a clinician applies a special mixture of clay and algae, along with gentle electric stimulation to eliminate excess cellulite.

Cruising Toward Carnival

by Royal Holiday January 8, 2014
written by Royal Holiday

Cruisers who sail the Caribbean early in the year often find themselves heading straight into the heart of the wild celebrations of Carnival, complete with elaborate costumes, colorful parades, heavenly feasting, thrumming music, and unrestrained dancing. In most places, people celebrate Carnival in February. For this reason, some cruisers plan their early year trips to enjoy these party days while in their itinerary’s ports of call.

If you cannot cruise in February, though, it is still possible to enjoy of Carnival at other times of year. Many Caribbean islands celebrate Carnival or very similar celebrations in different months. Thus, there is a Carnival-type celebration somewhere in the Caribbean almost every week of the year. This makes it easy for travelers to arrange to be in port during the big party.

Islands that celebrate Carnival during the traditional period in February include such destinations as Curacao, Martinique, Aruba, Puerto Rico, and Trinidad and Tobago. Several other islands schedule their big party season later in the spring. Around the end of March or early April, Jamaica celebrates Bacchanal. St. Thomas and Cayman Islands have their parties toward the end of April or the beginning of May, while Barbuda’s is in June.

Summertime Carnivals are also very popular throughout the Caribbean. July through September sees partying on islands such as Barbados, St. Vincent, Antigua, Belize, St. John, and several others. During autumn, the Carnival season slows down significantly, but picks up again in December and around New Year in places like The Bahamas, St. Croix, and the Turks and Caicos Islands.

In most of these places, Carnival is the biggest event of the year, with the party usually lasting several
weeks. Therefore, a cruiser actually has a good chance of taking in the local Carnival at least one port of call. In fact, with a little advance planning, a real party devotee can enjoy several Carnivals on a single cruise.

Choose the Right Cabin to Avoid Vacation Headaches

by Royal Holiday December 12, 2013
written by Royal Holiday

As the size of modern cruise ships has increased over the last two decades, so has the variety of accommodations available to passengers. Some ships in Norwegian Cruise Line’s fleet, for example, offer cabins ranging from efficient 100-square-foot solos up to extravagant 5,000-square-foot Garden

Villa suites

For most passengers, the major factor in selecting a stateroom is price. However, savvy cruisers also carefully weigh other factors. Even within a narrow price range, there are often variations between cabins in terms of natural lighting, noise, and nearby amenities. Here are just a few of the many things to consider when choosing a cabin:

Size

In general, smaller staterooms are less expensive. When choosing how small to go, though, it is important to consider who the travelers are. Families often enjoy special family suites, which give parents with children more breathing room than they would find in a cheaper four-person cabin. Similarly, while a couple might be comfortable in the tiniest two-person cabin available, a pair of good buddies might find such intimate quarters a bit too cozy.

Location

A cabin’s location on the ship can have a huge impact on a passenger’s enjoyment. Inside staterooms are dark and too closed in for some cruisers, but are perfectly fine for passengers who spend no time in a cabin except to sleep. Cruisers who are prone to sea-sickness will likely appreciate more centrally-located cabins, where ship motion is less noticeable. Noise is also a consideration. Cabins close to the lido deck, engines, kitchen, or entertainment venues will be noisier than other cabins will be.

Amenities

Many cruisers sail in order to experience specific shipboard activities. Those seeking pampering might like a spa cabin with upgraded toiletries and bath facilities, along with priority access to the ship’s spa facilities. Passengers who live for the nightlife might want a mid-deck cabin close to the casino, lounges, and dance club.

No cruiser should break their budget splurging on a cabin they don’t really need. However, with a little extra thought and research, vacationers can select the ideal cabin for their money and have a much more relaxing cruise.

Cruise Lines and Celebrity Chefs Unite to Make Dining Even Better

by Royal Holiday December 10, 2013
written by Royal Holiday

The fine dining options available on cruise ships have always been a major draw for vacationers.

In fact, in their advertisements, many cruise companies highlight their exquisite menus and world-renowned chefs. A trend in the last few years has seen a number of celebrity chefs join several cruise lines, including a number of Royal Holiday affiliates.

Geoffrey Zakarian

The star of several Food Network programs, Geoffrey Zakarian has recently partnered with Norwegian

Cruise Line to open three dining venues on the company’s new ship, Norwegian Breakaway. Two

excellent Ocean Blue restaurants—one upscale, the other a more casual al fresco venue—are the cruise

line’s first specialty seafood restaurants. The Raw Bar features elegant shellfish and wine pairings.

Jacques Pepin

A long-time figure on PBS cooking programs, Jacques Pepin is the creative mind behind Jacques

restaurant on Oceania Cruises. Mr. Pepin is also the cruise line’s executive culinary director, thus

ensuring that the cuisine across all Oceania ships reflects the high-quality, yet simple perfection typical

of his dishes.

Guy Fieri

One of biggest personalities of the Food Network, Guy Fieri is renowned for his expertise in combining

food and fun. At the casual Guy’s Burger Joint on board several Carnival ships, cruisers can enjoy the

celebrity chef’s take on classic hamburgers and fries in a laid-back, 1950s-style diner.

Craig Hopson

The culinary legend behind the world-famous Le Cirque restaurant, Craig Hopson has joined Holland

America Line to bring his iconic restaurant’s flavor and ambiance to their ships. At least once every

cruise, the staff transforms each ship’s Pinnacle Grill into a floating reproduction of Le Cirque’s

innovative menu and unconventional decor.

These are just a few of culinary partnerships between high-profile chefs and cruise lines that have

emerged in the last few years. Travelers can look forward to more exciting collaborations in the future.

Retrospective – A Look Back at the New Cruise Ships of 2013

by Royal Holiday December 8, 2013
written by Royal Holiday

The year 2013 has been an exciting one for cruisers, as a number of Royal Holiday-affiliated lines added several new ships to their fleets. Bigger and better, these new vessels represent the growing popularity of cruising as an affordable and unforgettable vacation option. Each of these ships expands on their sister ships’ innovative designs and modern technologies, all to enhance the fun and relaxation that cruisers seek during a vacation at sea.

MSC Preziosa

Launched in March 2013, the MSC Preziosa merges classic Mediterranean style with luxurious design. With grand staircases studded with Swarovski crystal and elegant touches like the upper deck “infinity” pool, this newest flagship of MSC Cruises also includes innovative dining at the first Eataly restaurant to open on the high seas. Just for fun, she also features Vertigo, the longest single-rider waterslide aboard any cruise ship.

Norwegian Breakaway

As the largest cruise ship to homeport in Manhattan, everything about the Norwegian Breakaway is big and bold. Her naming ceremony in early May 2013 featured her godmothers, The Rockettes, who also host dance classes and perform on board. Her hull glows with the colorful art of pop artist Peter Max, while New York-themed murals decorate every common area of the ship. Foodies can enjoy delicious pastries at sea at the iconic Carlo’s Bakery.

Royal Princess

Officially named at an elaborate traditional ceremony in June 2013, the beautiful Royal Princess was christened by Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge. The elegant new ship boasts such features as a balcony on every outside cabin and an enchanting Vegas-style water and light show. In addition, her glass-enclosed SeaWalk extends over the side of the ship and allows passengers the thrill of standing directly over the rushing waves nearly 130 feet below.

While the launches of these brand new ships in 2013 mean more exciting choices for vacationers, cruising will only get better in the future. Dedicated cruisers are already looking forward to 2014, when several more ships are scheduled to make their maiden voyages.

Kids Included – Cruising with the Whole Family

by Royal Holiday December 6, 2013
written by Royal Holiday

Family cruises have become incredibly popular in the last several years as cruise lines have advertised so many affordable vacation packages. Between the holiday season, spring break, and summer time, there are plenty of opportunities during the year for a family to get away from it all and enjoy the resort-style fun that a cruise ship has to offer.

Before booking an ocean voyage, savvy cruisers consider each ship individually to make sure it really fits their family’s ideal vacation style and expectations. Here are a few things to think about when planning a cruise for the whole family.

Kids’ Entertainment

While most ships offer programs for children and teens, some go beyond the basics. Some ships pay special attention to family groups, and provide evening kids’ programs in addition to daytime activities, live shows that appeal especially to youngsters, or special club areas where younger passengers can mingle.

Babies and Small Children

Parents should understand policies concerning very young travelers before booking. For example, cruise ships generally have a minimum passenger age, typically somewhere between twelve weeks and six months. Likewise, some ships restrict young children’s participation in certain programs or may page parents to change diapers. On the other hand, some ships cater specifically to younger cruisers, and provide full nursery care, toy exchanges, in-cabin babysitting, and other helpful services.

Eating

The largest classes of modern ships offer a huge range of dining options. Usually at least one or two of those will have a menu, atmosphere, and serving hours suitable for even the pickiest eaters. Still, it’s a good idea to check out a ship’s eating selections before boarding, to avoid a week of complaints about the food.

Family Fun

Most ships offer children’s play areas as well as quiet places for parents to relax on their own. However, it’s also important to make sure there are things for the family to do as a group, such as suitable shows, dining establishments, or sports and activity centers.

Excursions

Different ports of call offer very different onshore experiences, some of which may be more suitable for families than others. Many parents might opt for a vacation that includes a stop at a private island resort, which will often have many planned activities hosted by the cruise line itself, such as horseback riding or swimming with dolphins. These highly organized onshore excursions are often easier for a family to manage without having to worry about navigating an unfamiliar city on their own.

Cruise Lines Partner with Sports Teams for Business and Pleasure

by Royal Holiday December 4, 2013
written by Royal Holiday

Early November 2013 saw a flurry of announcements of partnerships between several Royal Holiday-affiliated cruise lines and professional sports teams. These joint ventures are sure to give cruisers many additional opportunities for vacation enjoyment.

Carnival and the New Orleans Saints

Carnival Cruise Lines is now the Official Cruise Partner of the New Orleans Saints football team. This is a natural match for the two organizations, as Carnival has had a strong relationship with the Big Easy for nearly two decades. Today, the company bases two ships out of New Orleans, from which it takes more than 300,000 passengers on Caribbean cruises every year.

The partnership is Carnival’s first such collaboration with an NFL franchise. The November 17 game between the Saints and San Francisco 49ers coincided with the arrival of the completely rebuilt Carnival Sunshine. The celebration included a free-cruise giveaway to a lucky spectator at the football game. In coming years, the two companies hope to aim their shared devotion to exciting entertainment toward enhancing economic development in the New Orleans region.

Celebrity and the New York Rangers

In a similar arrangement, Celebrity was named Official Cruise Line of the New York Rangers ice hockey team. This marketing association will give Rangers fans special access to Celebrity perks, while the cruise line will be featured during hockey games at Madison Square Garden.

A centerpiece of this partnership will be The Rangers Legends Cruise aboard the Celebrity Summit. Debuting in August 2014, this seven-night theme cruise to Bermuda will give fans the chance to mingle with Rangers superstars Stephane Matteau, Ron Duguay, Adam Graves, and Ron Greschner.

Norwegian and the Miami Dolphins

The christening of Norwegian Cruise Lines’ newest ship promises to be a little unusual. Recently, Norwegian announced that the Miami Dolphins Cheerleaders would be the official godmothers of the brand new Norwegian Getaway. The christening ceremony in February 2014 will also mark the start of a partnership in which Norwegian will officially be named the official cruise line of the Miami Dolphins football franchise. The affiliation will include promotions and cruise giveaways at football games.

Healthy Cruising

by Royal Holiday December 2, 2013
written by Royal Holiday

SaladHealth is probably the last thing most cruise passengers are thinking about as they board their ship destined for some sunny island paradise. For many, there’s nothing wrong with spending a week at sea in complete decadence, indulging in gourmet cheeseburgers and frosty chocolate shakes, and then popping that top button and kicking back to lounge by the pool. It is a vacation, after all.

However, more and more cruisers are increasingly health conscious. They work hard to eat right and keep fit. Fortunately, cruise lines recognize this, and in recent years have introduced a range of innovations to help their passengers keep healthy and happy.

Eating

With several restaurants on every ship, each offering more delectable cuisine than the last, the temptation to over-indulge is almost overwhelming. Like any other restaurant, of course, these eateries generally offer a range of delicious dishes especially for their patrons who are counting their calories. Increasingly, cruise ships also feature one or two places that cater to those craving lighter, healthier fare. For instance, sushi restaurants have become quite popular on modern vessels. Passengers with special dietary restrictions needn’t worry, either. With a simple call to the cruise line, cruisers can ascertain which restaurants can provide for specific needs, such as gluten-free or vegan diets.

Fitness and Well-being

Most cruise ships provide several facilities to help patrons keep fit, including gyms, pools, jogging tracks, and ball courts. Larger ships even offer more elaborate athletic options, such as cycling, rock-climbing walls, yoga classes, or ropes courses. Additionally, ship spas typically also provide a range of relaxation services and facilities to help passengers recover from unhealthy stress. Whether it’s acupuncture, massage, or sauna, there is a tranquil option suitable for everyone.

Medications and Insurance

The best medicine is to be prepared. Wise passengers bring a well-stocked toiletries bag that includes all the basic over-the-counter treatments they might need: painkillers, sleeping aids, sun block, seasickness pills, allergy medication, and so on. Fortunately, most of these types of medication are readily available on any cruise, so forgetting a basic item is not a problem. However, that is not the case with prescription medications. For this reason, it is important for passengers to double-check that they have enough prescription medications to last for their entire cruise. For added peace of mind, many cruisers also elect to purchase travel insurance to cover any unforeseen problems.

Ship Doctors

No amount of healthy eating, exercise, or preparation can prevent accidents from happening. For this reason, all cruise ships have a well-staffed medical center and qualified doctor available. Newer and larger ships even have facilities comparable to mini-hospitals. Many cruise lines also partner with land-based medical centers to establish effective tele-medicine channels. With such innovations, cruise lines are taking great strides towards ensuring the health of their passengers.

Ocean Wear – Dressing for a Cruise Vacation

by Royal Holiday November 23, 2013
written by Royal Holiday

Dressing for a cruise can be a little confusing for first-time passengers, and can even befuddle experienced cruisers now and then. The reason for this is that attitudes toward cruise attire have shifted significantly over the years. Prior to World War II, cruising was a formal affair enjoyed mainly by the wealthy. Cruise vacations became more affordable in the 1960s and began catering to more middle class passengers. By the 1990s, much of the formality had been replaced by more casual attitudes.

Today, cruise dress codes are relatively relaxed compared to 50 years ago, but they do vary from cruise line to cruise line. The best recommendation is to check the ship’s policy before packing in order to avoid any awkward surprises. In general, it is a good idea to consider five different situations when packing clothes for a cruise:

Lounging, Fitness, and Sports

The favorite daytime activity on most cruises is poolside lounging or taking advantage of the many shipboard sports and gym facilities. For these activities, of course, swimwear, shorts, tank tops, and athletic clothes are perfectly acceptable and expected.

Casual

For daytime activities away from the pool and courts, casual wear is generally fine: longer shorts, jeans, tee shirts, and other dress-down wear. For casual dining, most lido deck restaurants even allow flip-flops and a cover garment over a swimsuit.

Cruise Casual

When evening falls, parts of many ships might suggest a slightly more upscale dress code. Most of the time, “cruise casual” is encouraged at dinner and in most entertainment venues. This simply means a collared shirt and decent slacks or jeans for men, and a casual dress or slacks and a blouse for women.

Formal

Most cruises have one or two formal nights, as well. During these times, men are encouraged to dine in a suit or tuxedo, while women typically wear a nice cocktail dress or pantsuit. Some venues may encourage similar attire at all times—elegant restaurants or certain lounges, for example.

Excursions

How to dress for excursions varies by cruise and by destination. For sunny beach excursions, swimwear is the obvious choice. Urban excursions generally require comfortable shoes and casual wear suitable for a daytime lunch spot. A warm hat, sweater, or raincoat might also be wise choices depending upon the exact location.
