The Norwegian Getaway Receives a Warm Welcome, Miami-Style

by Royal Holiday February 12, 2014
written by Royal Holiday

Fireworks, pom-poms, Latin-inspired music, and the traditional smashing of a bottle of champagne were just part of the energetic fanfare at the Norwegian Getaway’s christening party in Miami, Florida. Thousands of media and travel professionals attended the bash on February 7 to experience the expansive new ship’s latest features and mix with celebrities sharing in the celebration.

Brooke Burke-Charvet, host of TV’s “Dancing with the Stars,” emceed the grand event, which featured sporty dance numbers performed by the Miami Dolphins Cheerleaders in their capacity as official Godmothers of the Norwegian Getaway.

At center stage for the evening was recording artist and Latin GRAMMY Award winner, Pitbull, who kept guests dancing to hot Miami beats all night long. His performance perfectly complemented Norwegian’s latest entertainment offering: The GRAMMY Experience at Sea.

Several other top names associated with the new ship attended the event. Spotted at the party was Iron Chef and restaurant maven, Geoffrey Zakarian, who is the genius behind three of the Getaway’s most innovative eateries. Buddy Valastro, “The Cake Boss” and creator of the onboard “Carlo’s Bake Shop,” also made the rounds at the event. In addition, Miami-based graphic artist, David “Lebo” Le Batard, who painted the strikingly colorful mermaid-themed art decorating the Getaway’s hull, mingled with the crowd.

Besides star watching, attendees of the christening party also had the opportunity to experience some of the forward-thinking features of Norwegian’s newest ship. Guests previewed the highly anticipated and mysterious Illusionarium, as well as the massive shipboard aqua park and its five water slides. A few lucky partiers even danced in Spice H2O, the Getaway’s sizzling outdoor dance club and epicenter of the ship’s Miami-themed entertainment.

From her new home port of Miami, the Norwegian Getaway will take cruisers throughout the Caribbean. Passengers can look forward to an unforgettable cruise, alive with hot Latin beats and the spicy Miami culture.

A Romantic Getaway at Sea

by Royal Holiday February 5, 2014
written by Royal Holiday

With Valentine’s Day come countless plans by couples to spend the special day together doing something truly romantic and memorable. The wide array of special amenities offered on cruises have long made them a favorite choice for lovers young and old to get away from it all. In fact, most cruise lines make it easy to have a romantic getaway any time of year, making ocean voyages a popular choice for couples, even when it’s not Valentine’s Day.

Romantic Cruises

Virtually all cruise lines offer services especially for couples. Cruises are renowned for their fine dining options, and most ships have a range of options for dancing, movies, and other entertainment. For this reason, it’s easy to plan a perfect night out while on board a luxury cruise ship. Many lines offer special amenities such as couples’ massages in the spa, private poolside cabanas, and relaxing adults-only decks far from splashing kids.

Because romantic cruises are so popular, it is important to do a little planning. Certain offerings—like couples’ massages or special occasion packages—tend to sell out early, so book them well in advance. Also, on ships with traditional dining, it may be difficult to reserve a table for two without letting the restaurant know well in advance. Of course, ships also offer fine salon facilities that provide passengers with plenty of opportunities to prepare for a special evening.

For Those Special Occasions

The seductive atmosphere of the ocean air, stars overhead, and exotic beaches make the perfect backdrop for an especially romantic once-in-a-lifetime celebration. For this reason, many cruising couples plan their weddings or honeymoons on the high seas.

Most cruise lines offer special wedding accommodations. For example, Carnival Cruises, which hosts around 2,600 weddings every year, recently announced a revamped range of wedding packages with all the trappings, from intimate ceremonies for just the couple, to huge wedding bashes for dozens of guests.

Many honeymooners opt to sail to an exotic destination after getting married. While not all cruise lines offer special accommodations for newlyweds, it never hurts to mention it. Now and then, honeymooners might find it a little easier to reserve a special table or spa session.

For already married couples who would like to re-commit to each other, most ships provide an opportunity to renew vows. Depending upon the ship, this may be a ceremony performed for several couples at once or it may be special for one couple, so it is important to inquire before sailing.

Whatever the special occasion, cruises offer a host of opportunities for couples to enjoy an unforgettable romantic experience at sea.

Golden Opportunities for Cruisers in their Golden Years

by Royal Holiday January 28, 2014
written by Royal Holiday

Cruising has long been popular with senior passengers who have ample time in retirement to take long journeys across the ocean to discover exotic seaside locales. The concerns of mature cruisers are naturally a bit different than for others, but because they make up such a large fraction of customers, cruise lines typically go out of their way to cater to these most discerning of passengers.

Not content to sit back and relax, many senior cruisers seek a challenge on their vacations. For this reason, they carefully consider a ship’s enrichment programs before booking a cruise. Modern ships offer countless options for dance lessons, academic seminars, culinary exploration, and much more. Of course, ports of call also offer limitless opportunities to experience and learn. Whether on or off the ship, mature travelers can explore many possible routes to intellectual stimulation.

One of the most pressing concerns for older passengers is whether or not a cruise ship has special accommodations for health or mobility limitations. Fortunately, practically all modern cruise ships have top quality medical facilities on board. Increasingly, these have real-time connections to land-based facilities, as well. In addition, every ship offers staterooms, spa and sport facilities, and other considerations that make life easier for those with mobility impairments or other special needs.

Many mature cruisers also find themselves traveling alone. Recent innovations in shipboard accommodations– such as the affordable solo cabins on the Norwegian Epic– have allowed these passengers to enjoy a vacation without breaking the bank. Entertainment and dining venues are also increasingly considerate of those who are traveling alone.

Clearly, for the most mature and sophisticated passengers on the high seas, modern cruising is as comfortable, accessible, and inclusive as ever. How could it be any better?

In late 2013, a study on traveling among seniors was released by a trio of notable organizations: the US Travel Association, the Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies, and the Global Commission on Aging. Their findings indicated that travel experiences such as cruising have a positive effect on heart health and mental well-being.

Senior cruisers can now feel confident that their elegant ocean voyages not only provide memorable fun, but promote better heath, as well.

Valentine’s Day Cruise to Support the American Heart Association

by Royal Holiday January 23, 2014
written by Royal Holiday

Relaxation and charity will mix when a major cruise line and its passengers observe American Heart Month with a special fundraising voyage in February 2014.

For the latest event in Princess Cruises’ “Cruises for a Cause” program, the Ruby Princess will sail the Caribbean during the Valentine’s Day holiday from Feb. 10-15 in an effort to raise funds for the American Heart Association (AHA).

Cruise passengers can opt to convert a portion of their fare into a contribution to the AHA. In order to encourage charitable giving, Princess Cruises will match passengers’ contributions dollar for dollar with the goal of raising $1 million for the cardiac health organization.

For the five-day cruise, the ship will depart from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, on Feb. 10 and stop in the beautiful Caribbean ports of Cozumel, Mexico, and Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands. Accompanying cruise passengers on the ship will be a number of cardiac health experts and celebrities hosting a range of special events. Activities will include hands-on CPR lessons, healthy eating classes, seminars, a fundraising walk, and other heart-healthy educational opportunities.

Featured guests aboard the Ruby Princess will include several authors, TV celebrities, and a motivational speaker. Other guests will include a world-renowned cardiothoracic surgeon, Dr. Kathy Magliato, and chef Marc Anthony Bynum, who will offer cooking lessons for health-conscious passengers. In the past, promotional materials for the event featured Gavin MacLeod, who portrayed Captain Stubing on the hit 1970s romantic sitcom The Love Boat.

As a Valentine’s Day cruise, this sailing will offer plenty of opportunities for couples. During the tranquil Caribbean voyage, they can renew their vows and enjoy themed events, exquisite dining, and many other romantic activities.

The cruise is the second of Princess’ “Cruising for a Cause” initiative. The program’s inaugural sailing, which launched in November 2013, raised $600,000 for two veterans’ charities, Operation Homefront and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund.

Cruising with Dr. Seuss

by Royal Holiday January 20, 2014
written by Royal Holiday

Beginning in 2014, family cruisers will have the opportunity to sail with the Cat-in-the-Hat, the Lorax, and other kids’ favorites in a brand-new “Seuss at Sea” program. Announced in early December 2013, this initiative brings together two brands known far and wide for their playful fun: Dr. Seuss Enterprises and Carnival Cruise Lines.

“Seuss at Sea” will eventually roll out to all of Carnival’s 24 ships over 18 months, starting with the Carnival Splendor in February 2014. The program includes a range of fun activities aimed at entertaining the entire family. The first sea day of every cruise will offer a “Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast” menu with items like crazy-colored pancakes, “moose juice,” and, of course, green eggs. A zany “Seuss-a-palooza Parade” featuring favorite Dr. Seuss characters will sweep up kids and parents in a conga line of dancing and singing. On select evenings, the crew will show animated movies like “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” on the lido deck.

When it is refurbished later in 2014, the Carnival Freedom will boast a dedicated play area, where kids can read books, play games, and enjoy colorful decor in the whimsical style of Dr. Seuss’ beloved stories. The Carnival Vista will offer a similar playscape when it launches in 2016.

Dr. Seuss is a natural match for Carnival, the line that popularized the “Fun Ship Freddy” mascot. Every year, the cruise line carries over 700,000 children to destinations all over the world. Incorporating a Dr. Seuss theme is just one more way Carnival strives to make its ocean vacations memorable for its family cruise passengers.

In announcing “Seuss at Sea,” Carnival continues a trend among cruise lines partnering with family-friendly cartoon brands. Disney Cruise Line has featured their classic characters since entering the cruise business in 1998. Norwegian Cruise Line teamed up with Nickelodeon in 2010 to offer entertainment featuring characters like SpongeBob SquarePants. That same year, Royal Caribbean also added DreamWorks characters, such as Shrek, to its lineup of activities.

Shipboard Spas – Ultimate Relaxation on the High Seas

by Royal Holiday January 13, 2014
written by Royal Holiday

Cruise ship spas have come a long way over the years. The earliest spas on most ships were little more than cramped rooms with barely enough room for a massage table and masseuse. Today, shipboard spas have grown into truly luxurious spaces where patrons can receive a full range of services to promote relaxation and well-being. In fact, these amenities are so popular that many cruise lines today offer special packages and stateroom accommodations for vacationers seeking a complete ocean spa experience.

Like the spas themselves, cruise ships have significantly expanded their services over the years is response to the needs and desires of their clientele. Visitors to these facilities can generally choose from a wide variety of options, ranging from ancient to high-tech, and Western to Eastern. Following are a few of the selections offered by many cruise lines.

Salon Services

Virtually all cruise ships have an array of beauty options available using top products and the latest techniques. For elegant cruise evenings, the salons provide professional hairstyling, manicures, and other standard services. Of course, shipboard salons are pleased to offer services for both men and women.

Traditional Spa Treatments

Beyond the usual salon styling services, cruise ships possess serene spaces where passengers can completely unwind while enjoying a broad range of relaxing therapies. Beauty treatments like facials, detoxifying wraps, and exfoliating scrubs are available on practically every modern cruise ship. For relaxation, every spa provides massages – usually several different kinds. Whether it is a Swedish, hot-stone, or deep-tissue massage, the spa services are generally among the most sought-after amenities on any cruise ship.

Eastern Spa Treatments

As Americans have learned more about Eastern medicine over the last few decades, the treatments have become available on cruise ships. Many ships offer acupuncture and acupressure (or reflexology) services to help patrons with their aches and pains, as well as to simply maintain their bodily energies. Also popular is Reiki, a technique in which a therapist places his or her palms on the patron’s body to redirect its energies and promote relaxation.

Medi-spa Treatments

Most shipboard spas offer a wide selection of high-tech cosmetic services, many of which are provided by licensed medical professionals. Tooth-whitening is a popular service for those who want to show off a flashy smile. Botox and dermal filler injections are also available to those seeking to smooth out their wrinkles in a quick and minimally invasive way. Many spas can also provide a regimen of ionothermie in which a clinician applies a special mixture of clay and algae, along with gentle electric stimulation to eliminate excess cellulite.

Cruising Toward Carnival

by Royal Holiday January 8, 2014
written by Royal Holiday

Cruisers who sail the Caribbean early in the year often find themselves heading straight into the heart of the wild celebrations of Carnival, complete with elaborate costumes, colorful parades, heavenly feasting, thrumming music, and unrestrained dancing. In most places, people celebrate Carnival in February. For this reason, some cruisers plan their early year trips to enjoy these party days while in their itinerary’s ports of call.

If you cannot cruise in February, though, it is still possible to enjoy of Carnival at other times of year. Many Caribbean islands celebrate Carnival or very similar celebrations in different months. Thus, there is a Carnival-type celebration somewhere in the Caribbean almost every week of the year. This makes it easy for travelers to arrange to be in port during the big party.

Islands that celebrate Carnival during the traditional period in February include such destinations as Curacao, Martinique, Aruba, Puerto Rico, and Trinidad and Tobago. Several other islands schedule their big party season later in the spring. Around the end of March or early April, Jamaica celebrates Bacchanal. St. Thomas and Cayman Islands have their parties toward the end of April or the beginning of May, while Barbuda’s is in June.

Summertime Carnivals are also very popular throughout the Caribbean. July through September sees partying on islands such as Barbados, St. Vincent, Antigua, Belize, St. John, and several others. During autumn, the Carnival season slows down significantly, but picks up again in December and around New Year in places like The Bahamas, St. Croix, and the Turks and Caicos Islands.

In most of these places, Carnival is the biggest event of the year, with the party usually lasting several
weeks. Therefore, a cruiser actually has a good chance of taking in the local Carnival at least one port of call. In fact, with a little advance planning, a real party devotee can enjoy several Carnivals on a single cruise.

Choose the Right Cabin to Avoid Vacation Headaches

by Royal Holiday December 12, 2013
written by Royal Holiday

As the size of modern cruise ships has increased over the last two decades, so has the variety of accommodations available to passengers. Some ships in Norwegian Cruise Line’s fleet, for example, offer cabins ranging from efficient 100-square-foot solos up to extravagant 5,000-square-foot Garden

Villa suites

For most passengers, the major factor in selecting a stateroom is price. However, savvy cruisers also carefully weigh other factors. Even within a narrow price range, there are often variations between cabins in terms of natural lighting, noise, and nearby amenities. Here are just a few of the many things to consider when choosing a cabin:

Size

In general, smaller staterooms are less expensive. When choosing how small to go, though, it is important to consider who the travelers are. Families often enjoy special family suites, which give parents with children more breathing room than they would find in a cheaper four-person cabin. Similarly, while a couple might be comfortable in the tiniest two-person cabin available, a pair of good buddies might find such intimate quarters a bit too cozy.

Location

A cabin’s location on the ship can have a huge impact on a passenger’s enjoyment. Inside staterooms are dark and too closed in for some cruisers, but are perfectly fine for passengers who spend no time in a cabin except to sleep. Cruisers who are prone to sea-sickness will likely appreciate more centrally-located cabins, where ship motion is less noticeable. Noise is also a consideration. Cabins close to the lido deck, engines, kitchen, or entertainment venues will be noisier than other cabins will be.

Amenities

Many cruisers sail in order to experience specific shipboard activities. Those seeking pampering might like a spa cabin with upgraded toiletries and bath facilities, along with priority access to the ship’s spa facilities. Passengers who live for the nightlife might want a mid-deck cabin close to the casino, lounges, and dance club.

No cruiser should break their budget splurging on a cabin they don’t really need. However, with a little extra thought and research, vacationers can select the ideal cabin for their money and have a much more relaxing cruise.

Cruise Lines and Celebrity Chefs Unite to Make Dining Even Better

by Royal Holiday December 10, 2013
written by Royal Holiday

The fine dining options available on cruise ships have always been a major draw for vacationers.

In fact, in their advertisements, many cruise companies highlight their exquisite menus and world-renowned chefs. A trend in the last few years has seen a number of celebrity chefs join several cruise lines, including a number of Royal Holiday affiliates.

Geoffrey Zakarian

The star of several Food Network programs, Geoffrey Zakarian has recently partnered with Norwegian

Cruise Line to open three dining venues on the company’s new ship, Norwegian Breakaway. Two

excellent Ocean Blue restaurants—one upscale, the other a more casual al fresco venue—are the cruise

line’s first specialty seafood restaurants. The Raw Bar features elegant shellfish and wine pairings.

Jacques Pepin

A long-time figure on PBS cooking programs, Jacques Pepin is the creative mind behind Jacques

restaurant on Oceania Cruises. Mr. Pepin is also the cruise line’s executive culinary director, thus

ensuring that the cuisine across all Oceania ships reflects the high-quality, yet simple perfection typical

of his dishes.

Guy Fieri

One of biggest personalities of the Food Network, Guy Fieri is renowned for his expertise in combining

food and fun. At the casual Guy’s Burger Joint on board several Carnival ships, cruisers can enjoy the

celebrity chef’s take on classic hamburgers and fries in a laid-back, 1950s-style diner.

Craig Hopson

The culinary legend behind the world-famous Le Cirque restaurant, Craig Hopson has joined Holland

America Line to bring his iconic restaurant’s flavor and ambiance to their ships. At least once every

cruise, the staff transforms each ship’s Pinnacle Grill into a floating reproduction of Le Cirque’s

innovative menu and unconventional decor.

These are just a few of culinary partnerships between high-profile chefs and cruise lines that have

emerged in the last few years. Travelers can look forward to more exciting collaborations in the future.

Retrospective – A Look Back at the New Cruise Ships of 2013

by Royal Holiday December 8, 2013
written by Royal Holiday

The year 2013 has been an exciting one for cruisers, as a number of Royal Holiday-affiliated lines added several new ships to their fleets. Bigger and better, these new vessels represent the growing popularity of cruising as an affordable and unforgettable vacation option. Each of these ships expands on their sister ships’ innovative designs and modern technologies, all to enhance the fun and relaxation that cruisers seek during a vacation at sea.

MSC Preziosa

Launched in March 2013, the MSC Preziosa merges classic Mediterranean style with luxurious design. With grand staircases studded with Swarovski crystal and elegant touches like the upper deck “infinity” pool, this newest flagship of MSC Cruises also includes innovative dining at the first Eataly restaurant to open on the high seas. Just for fun, she also features Vertigo, the longest single-rider waterslide aboard any cruise ship.

Norwegian Breakaway

As the largest cruise ship to homeport in Manhattan, everything about the Norwegian Breakaway is big and bold. Her naming ceremony in early May 2013 featured her godmothers, The Rockettes, who also host dance classes and perform on board. Her hull glows with the colorful art of pop artist Peter Max, while New York-themed murals decorate every common area of the ship. Foodies can enjoy delicious pastries at sea at the iconic Carlo’s Bakery.

Royal Princess

Officially named at an elaborate traditional ceremony in June 2013, the beautiful Royal Princess was christened by Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge. The elegant new ship boasts such features as a balcony on every outside cabin and an enchanting Vegas-style water and light show. In addition, her glass-enclosed SeaWalk extends over the side of the ship and allows passengers the thrill of standing directly over the rushing waves nearly 130 feet below.

While the launches of these brand new ships in 2013 mean more exciting choices for vacationers, cruising will only get better in the future. Dedicated cruisers are already looking forward to 2014, when several more ships are scheduled to make their maiden voyages.
