ONBOARD AND PREPARED: WHAT YOU SHOULD PACK TO AVOID ANY HEALTH ISSUES IN THE OPEN SEA

What to pack for a cruise

Modern cruises feature medical clinics on board staffed by trained professionals. However, they don’t always have your specific medications, your trusted brands, or the immediate availability you need when something bothers you in the middle of a day at sea. The good news is that preventing most of the common health issues can be simple: it only requires a little planning before sailing. Here’s the definitive guide on what to pack for a cruise to take care of your health without wasting a minute of fun.

THE NUMBER ONE ENEMY: SEASICKNESS

Although modern ships have advanced stabilizing systems, seasickness remains the most common illness among passengers, especially among first-timers or when the sea is more erratic. The key is prevention: taking your medicine before symptoms appear, not after.

The Caffeinated Biodramina is the most recommended option among experienced cruise travelers, since it combats nausea without causing drowsiness and ruining your day. The Scopolamine patches, available with a medical prescription, are another ideal option for those who get easily dizzy: you place them behind the ear, and the medication is released gradually over a few days. If you prefer natural options, ginger in capsules or as an infusion, taken a few hours before traveling, is another great option, as are acupressure wristbands that apply pressure to the P6 point on the wrist.

Another thing that works: choosing a cabin in one of the middle decks and in the center of the ship, where you’ll feel less movement.

THE BASIC KIT YOU CAN’T MISS

Beyond seasickness, there is a group of medications and supplies that every passenger should have in their bag no matter the destination. Paracetamol or ibuprofen for headaches, muscle pain, or fever; antistaminics for allergies or bug bites; medicine for gastrointestinal problems, which are more common than you think; high SPF sunscreen, especially for port days in the Caribbean; insect repellent for tropical zones; and an antiseptic cream for small scratches or cuts. Check what articles you CANNOT take on board.

If you have prescription medication, always take more than what you need for travel days, plus an extra for 3-5 days in case of an unforeseen delay. Keep them in your carry-on, never in your checked baggage, and save a copy of the prescription or the medication’s generic name in case you need to get more in a foreign port.

UNFORESEEN EVENTS YOU CAN ANTICIPATE

Some situations are not exactly medical but they are worth preventing. Travel insurance with medical coverage is, without a doubt, the most important investment for any cruise: a medical evacuation from the open sea can easily be over a hundred thousand dollars without coverage. Check whether your regular health insurance covers international and onboard medical care. If it doesn’t, purchase travel insurance specifically for your cruise.

Other unforeseen events you should anticipate: take digital and physical copies of your passport, insurance cards, emergency contacts, and cruise documentation; have the number of the onboard medical clinic from the first day; and know where the closest hospital or medical center of each port is.
